Faith Formation

Dear St. Patrick Faith Community,

St. Patrick Catholic Church is committed to faith formation of all children and adults in our Catholic community. During these very unusual times, we as a Church have been challenged in so many ways. The health and well-being of our Parishioners is at the forefront of our concerns and we are praying for our community daily.

As we embark on the new school year, the COVID-19 pandemic is causing a shift in our planning and execution of our Religious Education programs. After much prayer, consultation and conversation with all of the concerned parties (parents included), we have made a decisions for the upcoming 2020-2021 year regarding all of our Faith Formation/Religious Education programs. Please see the details for each program below:

Preschool-Grade 5: Traditional Religious Education

2020-2021 Format

The format for 2020-2021 will be AT HOME Catechesis/Religious Education. The program structure will be as follows:

  • We will offer a "Family Style" program, where the family participates in the formation of your children's faith. The goal is for the family to "meet" weekly to cover the material, which will be based on the Sunday Gospel.
  • Materials will be provided to families, along with the template for instruction.
  • Twice monthly group sessions will be conducted (via Zoom)-lasting 1 hour.
  • Kick-off date of this program will be at the end of September.
  • A family-style session will take place and children will have activities that are relevant for their age group.

Cost

$50 per family-this is strictly to cover the cost of materials for the program. If you have already paid for your child, you will receive a partial refund. Click here to register.

Program Lead: Mauro Saavedra

Previous Format

Last year PS-5th grade Religious Education was offered on Sunday or Monday, weekly for approximately 1 hour.

Conclusion

As stated earlier, the health and well-being of our parishioners / youth is at the forefront of our planning.  For traditional Religious Education we share a space with the St. Patrick School.  Given all of the guidelines and restrictions anticipated for this coming school year, a large part of our decision was made because we are not comfortable introducing additional students into the school setting and vice-versa.  Our program is successful, in large part, because of the time given by our volunteers.  The requirements that we would need to adhere to are just a bit daunting for a volunteer.  In addition to several other logistical factors, at-home catechesis is the most optimal solution for all involved.

6th-8th Grade: Genesis & Logos Programs

2020-2021 Format

There will be two options for the youth this year:

Option 1:

In-person sessions that will meet two times per month on Mondays, for approximately 1.5 hours. For those who have participated in the past, this will be a reduction in content, as we will be unable to share a meal or use the gym.

Option 2:

At home Genesis & Logos program. This will be a program where the youth will watch a video and use a supplemental book. (6th Grade: Encounter; 7th/8th Grade: Chosen) with video group sessions twice a month.

Cost

$50 per student-this is strictly to cover the cost of materials for the program. If you have already paid for your child, you will receive a partial refund. Click here to register.

Previous Format

Last year 6th-8th Grade youth met two times per month on Mondays for 2.5 hours.  The youth moved through various “stations”, experiencing various faith-based activities.

Conclusion

The Genesis & Logos program is conducted in the Parish, therefore in-person, with limited-numbers is an option.  We are offering both programs, understanding that some families are not comfortable with in-person faith formation.  We will adhere to all social-distancing guidelines given by the CDC, State of Michigan and Oakland County Health Department for in-person sessions.

First Eucharist-Sacramental Preparation (typically 2nd Grade)

2020-2021 Format

The format for 2020-2021 will be AT HOME Catechesis/Sacramental Preparation. The program structure will be as follows:

  • We will offer a First Eucharist Preparation program where the parents/student participates in the formation of these very important Sacraments (Reconciliation and First Eucharist). The goal is for the parents/child to review materials and participate in monthly video sessions.
  • Our Sacramental Prep children must be enrolled in either the St. Patrick Catholic School or "Traditional" Religious Education. This program is meant to enhance the faith formation and focus on preparing for the Sacraments.
  • Materials will be provided to families.
  • We will also provide Parent Session for parents to view at the leisure. These sessions will provide good information for parents will and overall Faith theme.
  • The kick-off date of this program will be at the end of October.
  • We will have a couple additional sessions in the Church during the course of the year with details to come.

Cost

$30 per student-this is strictly to cover the cost of the materials for the program. If you have already paid for your child, you will receive a partial refund. Click here to register.

Previous Format

Last year our First Eucharist Candidates met monthly, beginning in October, for several sessions leading up to a May First Eucharist (although the First Eucharist celebration took place in July, due to COVID restrictions).  Children met in the school and a parent session was conducted in the Social Hall.  Parents and children joined at the end of the session for 5pm Mass (which was geared toward the First Communicants).

Conclusion

Similar to our Religious Education program, the health and well-being of our parishioners / youth is at the forefront of our planning.  For Sacramental Preparation we share a space with the St.

Last year our Confirmation Candidates participated in one of two “tracks”, fall or spring.  The Fall Candidates participated in sessions, typically held on Sunday evenings and were confirmed in November.  Our spring candidates met beginning in January, however their sessions were cut short due to COVID-19.  The missed sessions were / are being caught up and they will be confirmed in December 2020.

Conclusion

The Confirmation preparation program is conducted in the Parish, therefore in-person, with limited-numbers is an option.  We are offering both programs, understanding that some families are not comfortable with in-person faith formation.  We will adhere to all social-distancing guidelines given by the CDC and Health Department for in-person sessions.
